Bridge Caissons
Strong Foundations for
Long-Lasting Structures
When it comes to bridge construction, a stable and secure foundation is non-negotiable. That’s where bridge caissons come in. They provide deep, reinforced support for bridge piers in even the most challenging environments, including underwater and soft-soil locations.
Bridge caissons are large, watertight structures — typically made of concrete or steel — used to create a solid foundation for bridges. Caissons are sunk into the ground or lake bed and filled with concrete to form a permanent, load-bearing base. This method ensures the weight of the bridge is properly transferred to deeper, more stable layers of soil or rock, preventing settlement or shifting over time.
There are several types of bridge caissons, including:
- Open caissons – open at the bottom and sunk into place by excavating soil from inside the structure
- Box caissons – closed at the bottom and usually floated into position before being sunk
These caissons are often used when standard surface foundations aren’t possible due to water, mud, or unstable soil. Their ability to provide stable support in unpredictable ground conditions makes them essential for safe and long-lasting bridge construction.
Drilling for bridge caissons often involves advanced techniques and specialized equipment to accommodate varying depths and subsurface materials. At LoneStar Drilling, our experienced team and powerful rigs are equipped to handle these complex projects with precision and reliability.
