Sheet piles are a vital component in construction and infrastructure projects that require earth retention, excavation support, or water control. These long, interlocking steel sections are driven into the ground to form continuous walls, commonly used for retaining soil, preventing erosion, or creating cofferdams and seawalls. Installing sheet piles involves precision and the right choice of technique. Depending on the environment, we use vibro hammers, supplemental techniques like jetting and pre-augering. Each method is selected based on the type of soil, the material and shape of the sheet pile, and any site-specific concerns—such as vibration sensitivity or tight access.
Vibratory driving is one of the most commonly used methods, especially in looser soils. The vibro hammer reduces friction between the sheet pile and the surrounding ground, making installation faster and more efficient. In denser soils, impact driving may be necessary. This technique uses a hammer to deliver repeated blows to the top of the pile, forcing it into more resistant ground layers. In especially stubborn soil conditions, high-pressure water jetting or pre-augering may be used to loosen the ground and assist with placement.
Throughout every sheet pile installation, accuracy is essential. Maintaining vertical and proper alignment ensures that the wall performs as intended, whether it’s holding back soil, diverting groundwater, or forming the framework for a foundation. Interlock sealing between the sheet piles is another critical step, especially in applications where water infiltration must be prevented. A tight, continuous wall is key to structural integrity and long-term performance.
